The essay has now advanced to the final national level to be decided on in May 2014.

Thornton’s essay placed first for the state of Georgia, in addition to being chosen by the local DAR Chapter to represent Laurens Country.

Thornton considers History to be one of his favorite subjects, crediting his 11th Grade U.S. History teacher, Mr. Tapuwa Makaya for further inspiring his interest.  Thornton also thanks Coach Matt Gibbs for encouraging him to believe in himself, and English teachers, Mrs. Cindy Claxton and Ms. Cindi Scott for helping him advance in his writing ability.

Following his graduation from DHS this May, Thornton will attend Oconee Fall Line Technical College, pursuing an engineering degree as a Heating/Ventilation/Air Conditioning Technician.

Dublin High School's Troy Ashe was one of the 12 winners to receive the 2014 Class of Colored Rocks Foundation Prize.

The foundation's goal is to shine a light on distinguished male students of color, using them as a role model in an effort to improve high school graduation rates.

As a condition of his award, the DHS Senior committed to help develop a program for struggling peers.

Ashe considers himself to be "pretty good at math."  So, the DHS Student Council President and Homecoming King established an after-school program for first graders with a focus on "making math fun for the 'younger' generation."

Following his graduation from Dublin High School this May, Ashe will attend Moorehouse College where he plans to major in Chemistry and minor in Math.
